Professor or Assistant Professor
The Hertie School is recruiting a Professor or Assistant Professor of Macroeconomics. We are looking for a scholar who can combine state-of-the art empirically-based research with the applied teaching profile of a public policy school.
Applicants for this position must have a PhD in Economics, or expect to have this degree by the start of employment. An early career candidate will be appointed as Assistant Professor with a six-year clock (two three-year contracts) with the possibility of tenure. A more advanced candidate would be subject to a two-year probationary period before the granting of tenure. The expected start date is 1 September 2020.
The Hertie School seeks faculty with demonstrated capacity for research at the highest levels in their discipline, through an established record of publication in top outlets. We recruit faculty who will create a climate that embraces excellence and diversity with a strong commitment to high-quality teaching and innovative research of interest to the international scholarly community and policy-makers.
Candidates are expected to work well in an interdisciplinary, international environment with English as the language of instruction and operation. The successful candidate will teach courses in the School‘s Master, Executive Master, and PhD programmes. Collaboration with new centres of competence of the Hertie School is encouraged. Those are the Jacques Delors Institute Berlin, the Centre for International Security Policy, the Centre on Fundamental Rights, the Centre for Sustainability, the Centre on Digital Governance, and the Data Science Lab.
As a private university, the Hertie School offers an internationally competitive salary as well as a paid sabbatical after every five semesters. We provide excellent working conditions with outstanding financial and administrative support for research. The Hertie School is fully embedded in Berlin‘s vibrant research landscape and has close ties to the top institutions of the European and international teaching and research community as well as to the policy world. The scholar would be expected to contribute to the Berlin School of Economics, which involves eight universities (including the Hertie School) in the German capital. This position at the Hertie School is pending Academic Senate approval.

We will have preliminary discussions with selected candidates at the European Economics Association Job Market for Economists in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, December 18-19. The Hertie School will review applications that include a letter of motivation, a current curriculum vitae (publication list, degrees earned, if applicable: positions held, teaching experience, research projects, awards received), two writing samples and, if applicable, teaching evaluations.
