The University of Bremen is characterised by a high degree
of willingness to innovate. Especially for young scientists,
this results in a versatile research and teaching environment
with predictable and transparent career paths. Within the
framework of the Bund-Länder Programme for the Promotion
of Young Scientists, the Faculty 01 „Physics and Electrical
Engineering“ invites the following academic position.
(W1 with tenure track W2) initially as a temporary civil servant
for the subject area
Solid State Spectroscopy
Reference number JP 244/19
Personalities with excellent scientific and didactic skills are
invited to apply.
The appointment is initially for three years. After an interim
orienting advisory review, the appointment will be extended
for another three years. Pending on a positive performance
evaluation after a maximum of six years, the appointment will
become tenured with a lifetime civil-service position (W2).
The position is associated to the Institute of Solid State
Physics which has a strong research focus in the field of
synthesis, characterization and application of new semiconductor
materials and optically active semiconductor microand
We are looking for a leading candidate with advanced
research activity in the field of modern time-resolved solid
state spectroscopy. Possible research areas are optical
spectroscopy of semiconductor nanostructures (in particular
wide bandgap semiconductors) and nanoscale materials,
two-dimensional materials, or strongly correlated systems.
Activities for the development of new spectroscopic
methods, e.g. to study the interaction of solid surface with
the environment are appreciated.
The collaboration with the research groups at the Institute of
Solid State Physics, the Institute of Theoretical Physics and
the Bremen Center for Computational Material Science
(BCCMS) are expected.
The Institute of Solid State Physics and the associated
research groups offer a wide spectrum of experimental
techniques for the synthesis of different material systems,
processing of micro-, nanostructures and devices, structural
characterization by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction
as well for the analysis of surfaces and interfaces.
The prerequisites for employment are the completion of a
relevant course of study, primarily in physics, and a relevant
doctorate as well as further high-quality scientific achievements.
Pedagogical aptitude and the ability to teach the full
range of experimental physics as a major and minor subject
are required. Willingness to offer courses in English and
German are expected. Junior professors are relieved of a
proportion of the teaching load at the beginning of their
activities in order to be able to distinguish themselves
The University of Bremen offers an ideal academic environment

The University of Bremen offers a range of measures to
support newly hired staff. These include advice through the
Welcome Center, child-care facilities, dual-career assistance,
and opportunities for further professional development,
including language tuition.
Previous employment periods in universities and research
institutes may in total not exceed six years, irrespectively
from the time span since the doctorate (maximum five years)
(see § 117 BremBG).
The University of Bremen aims at increasing the share of
female faculty members in research and teaching. The
University has received multiple awards for its gender
equality policy and is certified as a family-friendly university.
Female candidates are explicitly encouraged to apply.
International applications and those from candidates with a
migration background are explicitly appreciated. Applicants
with disabilities will be given priority in case of equal
professional and personal aptitude.
Applications in English with the usual documents as well as
certificates and concepts for research and teaching within
the framework of the professorship in Bremen must be sent
to the following address by 31.03.2019 quoting the
