Kiel Marine Science (KMS) is the Centre for Interdisciplinary Marine Science at Kiel University. As one of four priority research areas at the University, KMS leads one Cluster of Excellence “Future Ocean” and is engaged in three Collaborative Research Centres. KMS has a world-wide reputation in integrative marine science. 39 working groups at seven faculties and 18 institutes cover expertise from areas such as climate research, coastal research, physical chemistry, botany, microbiology, mathematics and computer science, economics, law and social sciences. We nurture and develop world-class graduates and researchers at all levels of their career, establish relationships with leading academics and institutes in the field, and engage and develop outstanding contact with experts from the non-academic sectors.

Kiel Marine Science - Centre for Interdisciplinary Marine Science at Kiel University will establish the

Kiel Ocean Assessment and Solution Centre
(KOAS)

as a cross-faculty centre for integrated ocean research on political and socioeconomic decision-making and governance. The new centre will also serve as a platform for scientists and stakeholders to assess and synthesize scientific results and to develop practical solutions for the sustainable use of marine and coastal resources.

To establish the new centre we are looking for
  1. 1 Professorship (W2, permanent) in Political Economy of Marine and Coastal Resource Management,
  2. 1 Senior Scientist in Marine Food Security (see separate job advertisement)
  3. 1 Senior Scientist in Marine Resources and Hazard Risk Assessment (see separate job advertisement)
This is an exciting opportunity for excellent researchers motivated to work in integrative marine science and to play a key role in the implementation of our integrative research strategy.

The Kiel University, The Centre for Interdisciplinary Marine Science (KMS) and the Faculty of Agriculture and Nutrition Science (A&E) are pleased to announce a permanent professor position as soon as possible

(W2) in Political Economy of Marine and
Coastal Resource Management.

The successful candidate will represent the area of Bio-Resource Economics. We are searching for a candidate with a research profile in political economy applied to marine and coastal resource management. Possible research foci include environmental governance, governance of societal risk related to the ocean or coasts, or quantitative modeling of societal decision-making in the context of marine and coastal resource management.

Job Qualification: A PhD in agricultural economics, economics, political science or closely related disciplines is required. Strong research expertise in political economy preferably applied to marine and coastal resource management, marine resource economics, or integrated bioeconomic modelling should be proven by outstanding publications in international peer-reviewed journals and success in competitively-funded external research grants. We expect experience in interdisciplinary research, and especially welcome experience in linking quantitative political economy, institutional economics, or environmental and marine resource economics with political science and natural science. We welcome experience in transdisciplinary research and leadership documented by effective collaboration with non-academic experts, e.g. from industry, civil society, or governments.

Job Description: The successful candidate will establish and lead the Kiel Ocean Assessment and Solution Centre founded by KMS. The mission of the centre is twofold: (1) Development of a competitive and internationally visible integrative research programme on ocean-related decision-making and governance. (2) Development of a transdisciplinary platform for stakeholders and scientists to assess and synthesize scientific results to address practical solutions for the sustainable use of marine and coastal resources. In addition, the successful candidate is invited to engage in related interdisciplinary programmes at Kiel University, e.g. the Cluster of Excellence “Future Ocean” or the Kiel School of Sustainability, and at associated research institutions, e.g. GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel or Kiel Institute for the World Economy. The appointee will be actively involved in teaching in related Bachelor and Master programmes of the A&E-Faculty and the School of Sustainability.
