The Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig – Leibniz Institute for Animal Biodiversity (Bonn) and the Biology
department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Bonn, are calling for a
Professor (W3) for Biodiversity Monitoring
to be appointed immediately.
The Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK) (Leibniz Institute for Animal Biodiversity) is seeking an
exceptional and visionary scientist for a professorship for Biodiversity Monitoring. The professor will simultaneously hold a
chair for Biodiversity Monitoring at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology and Ecology of the University of Bonn. The contract
for this permanent position follows the "Jülicher Modell", with ZFMK as authorizing and financing institution and the University
of Bonn as contracting party. The mission of the ZFMK is to contribute to the conservation and exploration of species
diversity, to promote taxonomy and molecular biodiversity research. The chair will develop tools required for biodiversity
monitoring and for documentation and analysis of biodiversity changes especially in Central Europe, and to promote knowledge
Responsibilities of a successful candidate are
cooperation with the Directorate of ZFMK to develop research strategies and to establish initiatives promoting biodiversity
monitoring primarily in Europe,
development of research strategies, and of the infrastructure required for large-scale monitoring of species diversity and
for the analysis of drivers of change, in collaboration with other research institutes, NGOs and government agencies,
fundraising for research, participation on public relation, and fruitful interaction with the staff, the Leibniz Association, and
the wider scientific community,
establishment of strong partnerships in the local community, getting citizen scientists and natural history associations
The chair requires an excellent zoological background, knowledge in taxonomy and ecology of European fauna, in ecological
statistics, in modern species monitoring technologies, and familiarity with distribution modeling. Candidates have a strong
research and publication record in the field of species diversity, and an excellent understanding of the challenges in this
area of research. They are successful in fundraising, including planning, organizing and managing research in national and
international networks, and they are experienced in supervising and working with museum staff, students and volunteers.
Candidates are committed to the conservation of biodiversity and are actively engaged in research relevant for species
and habitat conservation. They are visionary and able to provide strategic direction and strong leadership. A successful
candidate is experienced in leading large research teams, formally qualified for a professorship, and able to participate
in the institute‘s self-governance. He/She is familiar with the goals and structure of the Leibniz Association (www.leibnizgemeinschaft.

The biology department and especially the zoological sciences of the University of Bonn closely collaborate with the ZFMK.
Collaborative research projects should address interdependencies between environment, land-use, phenotype and genome
