About GMIT
GMIT is the first university in Mongolia based on bilateral governmental cooperation: The founding of this transnational university was jointly initiated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Mongolian President Elbegdorj Tsakhia - and in 2018, the first Bachelor students graduated. The German Federal Government and the Mongolian Government are supporting GMIT as a pioneering model for the reform of higher education in Mongolia.
Being a dynamic, state university for scientific teaching and research, GMIT strives to serve Mongolia by educating highly qualified, socially responsible, internationally recognized engineers, and by applying advanced research and innovation for the benefit of society. The university responds to both private and public sector needs in the mineral resources sector and downstream industries. With its internationally accredited study programs, GMIT wants to become a leading university of engineering and technology in Mongolia, and in Asia.
On its campus based in the Nalaikh district of Ulaanbaatar, GMIT currently runs four B.Sc. programs in the fields of Raw Materials and Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Industrial Engineering, as well as an MBA program in 'International Management of Resources and Environment'. GMIT emphasizes applied and interdisciplinary research activities - right now the faculties and students are conducting more than 12 high profile research projects. Based on its international faculty and modern laboratories, GMIT aspires to extend its research network with German partner universities, Mongolian universities and international academic institutions.
Tasks of the Rector
The Rector constitutes, together with the Vice-Rector for Finance and Administration, the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and the Vice-Rector for Research, the Rectorate. The Rectorate manages the University and its operations. It discusses and decides on all matters related to GMIT's academic, administrative and financial development, for which it is authorized by the University's Statutes or the Board of Governors. The Rector is the chair of the Rectorate as well as of the Academic Senate. The Rector represents GMIT internally and externally.
The Rector is responsible for developing the academic profile of the university and in charge of setting up its academic structure. He/she manages the resources of GMIT in order to reach the goals given by the University's Vision and Mission. He/she provides effective leadership in compliance with the Magna Charta Universitatum. The Rector initiates and supervises the development of policies, rules, manuals and other relevant documents for managing the university. He/she initiates and supervises quality assurance processes.
The Rector is responsible for coordinating transparent and quality-oriented recruitment procedures for the academic staff. He/she is in charge of developing an internationally oriented community of students, lecturers, researchers, and staff. The Rector is responsible for fostering a positive, welcoming and motivating school environment at GMIT and to play a central role in this in order to deal with all current and future challenges of GMIT in a team-oriented way.
Candidate's Required Background
The Rector should have a strong academic background at the level of a full professor in a field relevant to the profile of GMIT - this should be demonstrated in his research and teaching record. He/she should have international experience and have spent a part of his/her academic career abroad in particular at German universities or have had extensively collaborated and networked in the international - especially German - academic sphere. The candidate should be a senior academic with a background in building institutions and leading academic personnel. Ideally he/she should also have spent a part of his/her career in the private or public sector.
The candidate should strongly identify with the goals and the vision of GMIT and be motivated to design and manage an appropriate and creative sustainability strategy as chair of the Rectorate.
Furthermore, the successful candidate should demonstrate the following strengths:
- Experience in developing and overseeing academic programs;
- Dedication in developing practice-oriented study programs in cooperation with industry in Mongolia;
- Entrepreneurial spirit for further developing a new type of institution and raising additional funds to the basic budget;
- Demonstrated strategic competence for developing an academic institution of international caliber and scope;
- High integrity and appreciation of transparent, quality-oriented processes regarding recruitment procedures and finances;
- A team-oriented management style for the small but dynamic and efficient team that will grow over time;
- Excellent communication skills as well as the ability to network and foster links with partners in industry and the international academic sphere;
- Excellent knowledge of English (knowledge of German is an advantage);
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-changing, dynamic environment within an intercultural context;
- Extensive knowledge, understanding, skills and competences in teaching and research;
- And preferably a network in the Mongolian or international business sector related to raw materials or up- and downstream industries.

GMIT offers an attractive, performance-related salary package taking into consideration the candidate's experience and profile. The position is based in Nalaikh/Ulaanbaatar and limited to five years.
The Rector can be re-appointed once.
