Research Professorship (W3) in the field of Global Sociology
WZB Berlin Social Science Center
The WZB Berlin Social Science Center is one of Germany's leading non-university research institutions for basic social science research. It is publicly funded and a member of the Leibniz Association. The WZB conducts research with a focus on the development, problems, and opportunities for innovation in a globalizing world. Research at the WZB is both theory-based and problem-oriented. It is characterized by long-term projects based on multidisciplinary cooperation, international comparison, and transnational perspectives. The current research areas at the WZB are Dynamics of Social Inequalities; Markets and Choice; Digitalization and Societal Transformation; International Politics and Law; Dynamics of Political Systems; Migration and Diversity; and Political Economy of Development.
The WZB seeks to fill the position of a
Research Professorship (f/m/x) in the field of Global Sociology
at the earliest possible date in collaboration with the Cluster of Excellence "Contestations of the Liberal Script" (SCRIPTS) funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft
(German Research Foundation, DFG). SCRIPTS analyses the contemporary controversies about the liberal order from a historical, global, and comparative perspective. It connects
the academic expertise in social sciences and area studies in Berlin, collaborates with research institutions in all world regions, and maintains cooperative ties with major
political, cultural, and social institutions (http://www.scripts-berlin.eu).
We seek an internationally renowned scholar who studies global structures, processes, and changes, their causes, and outcomes. More specifically, research themes could focus
on transnational processes, such as sociology of international organizations, global inequalities, global normativity, social movements, migration in the Global South, environmental
problems, gender relations, religion, or the interactions in transnational families. The research should focus on using the globe as a unit of analysis and take multiple theoretical
research perspectives into account, including global political theory.
Applicants must have a distinguished record of research excellence, as evidenced by outstanding international publications and other scholarly activities. Furthermore, we expect
candidates to engage in intellectual exchange across a broad range of topics in the discipline and the willingness to contribute to interdisciplinary collaborative work.
In consultation with the Berlin universities, the successful applicant will be appointed to a Special Professorship (W3), which entails a teaching load reduced to a total of
two hours per week. To this end, applicants must meet the qualifications for appointment as a university professor. Furthermore, the successful applicant will be entitled and
encouraged to propose additional research projects within the SCRIPTS context.
The WZB is committed to providing opportunities to people from all backgrounds to help create a welcoming and inclusive community. To this end, the WZB explicitly encourages
women and persons with a migratory background to apply. Equally well qualified disabled persons will be given priority.
Applications should be submitted latest by 29 February 2020, including a 1) cover letter, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) list of publications, 4) brief statement on
current and future research, and 5) contact information of two persons that can provide a reference, and should be addressed to:
