The Helmholtz Center Munich is globally recognized for innovations in data science and applied machine learning (ML), e.g.
through the Institute of Computational Biology (ICB) and Helmholtz AI. To further strengthen ML method development, we
are setting up a close integration with the European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS). For the coordination
and implementation of ELLIS activities at our center we are inviting applications for a
Science Manager - ELLIS network (f/m/d) 2020/0085
The overall purpose of this job is to manage a broad range of ELLIS-related work streams and network activities. You will
serve as a point of reference, ensuring particularly integration with current ML-initiatives. You are joining a growing team at
Helmholtz AI and ICB, in the dynamic, open and international environment at Helmholtz Munich.
You will be
managing a broad range of workstreams centred around ramping-up and extending ELLIS activities
liaising with partners in the ELLIS network and coordinating communication and joint initiatives, e.g. funding lines and
international exchange and visitor programmes
providing strategic and operational structure for ELLIS activities at Helmholtz Munich, e.g. regular meetings of the steering
and management boards
cultivating and stewarding interactions with various stakeholders, e.g. Helmholtz AI and the ICB as well as local universities
organizing, delivering and evaluating various scienti??c initiatives and events (e.g. exchange and visiting programmes,
hackathons and network meetings)
contributing to third-party fundraising and post-award management
enjoying freedom to shape initiatives
sharing our enthusiasm for promoting ML and nurturing our friendly, cooperative environment where everyone's
contribution is valued
working in an agile environment
a MSc-level university degree in life, computer or natural science; a data science background and a PhD are considered
experience in science management
breadth of interest in the research areas of the Helmholtz Association and in Artificial Intelligence
analytical and critical thinking skills to identify key considerations for a given issue or project
initiative and imagination
a collaborative, confident and creative approach
attention to detail and the ability to diligently manage a broad range of different responsibilities in your own time
the ability to interact with representatives of the scientific community and administrators at all levels of seniority
strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
excellent verbal and written fluency in English
very good working knowledge of MS-Office applications; experience with or affinity for project management software is a
