Scientific Assistant (f/m)
The Smart Data Innovation Lab of the Steinbuch Centre of Computing is offering a position to a person with working knowledge of
Linux system administration, preferably Red Hat who has at least a master university degree and is fluent in written and spoken English.
As an experienced system administrator, it is expected that you are fully competent to write shell scripts, configure network components,
set up firewalls and have a basic knowledge of security and privacy concepts. You are an eager team player with good communication
skills who engages in discussions respectfully and with strong arguments. You can adapt yourself to diverse international environments and are
fluent in spoken and written English.
The following qualifications are highly appreciated, but not prerequisite:
You have a strong background in developing data management concepts
You are interested in doing research and publishing scientific papers
You have worked with configuration and lifecycle management tools such as Puppet and Foreman
You are familiar with management of batch system, preferably HTCondor, Hadoop, and Spark
You have experience with virtualization environment, rather RHEV, Power8, Docker and hardware virtualization
You have working knowledge of storage management tools, such as RAID and LVM systems
You can handle working with versioning systems, such as Git
We are an enthusiastic international group of young data scientists and administrators, keen to challenge ourselves with appealing tasks.
We are also flexible in managing our working hours to suit individual members of the team. Being located at KIT’s computing center,
we are benefiting from being surrounded by experts. Our project – Smart Data Innovation Lab
(http://www.sdil.de) – is one of the three Big Data Competence Centers declared by BMBF. Within the
course of the project, we operate a series of very powerful and compelling machines such as a cluster of IBM’s Power8 architecture and
a cluster of Huawei servers. This platform is utilized to run some of the most persuasive commercial analytic tool sets such as IBM Watson
Foundations and SAP HANA, and well known open source tool sets, such as scikit-learn or RapidMiner.
This position is limited for one year, with the possibility of being extended. The salary follows the payment level TV-L, E13 (labor agreement for public service employees).
