The Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) is a member of the Leibniz Association (WGL). IGZ
carries out strategic research for sustainable production of vegetables and ornamental plants, and thus contributes
to the conservation of natural resources and generation of high quality vegetable products.
Controlled Environment Horticulture, the cultivation of vegetables and ornamental crops inside structures such as
greenhouses, is one focus of our institute. In these systems, high value crops can be produced in an efficient and
environmentally friendly way. Particularly, Controlled Environment Horticulture may be a central part of future
climate-saving food production systems. Vertical farming systems and plant factories depend on well controlled
environments. The IGZ greenhouse systems group is an innovation platform for plant physiology, sensor technology
and applied computer technology.
IGZ has a number of very advanced, partly unique facilities for growing plants under different climatic conditions.
These facilities are designed for the measurement of the interactions of plants and micro-organisms with their
environment. The complexity of these systems requires a sound knowledge of designing and conducting experiments
and a deep understanding of physical and plant physiological processes.
For these demanding tasks a permanent full-time post is to be filled immediately in the Research Group
"Sustainability and Stability of Horticultural Production Systems" at Großbeeren (near Berlin):
Controlled Environment Horticulture Systems
Reference number: 09/2017/4
The salary will be up to salary grade E 14 TV-L Tarifgebiet Ost (subject to qualifications and experience of the applicant)
Design and evaluation of facilities and of experiments to measure and control the conditions in the shoot and root environment of plants
Measurements of photosynthesis, transpiration and nutrient uptake
Process-based modelling of growth and yield of plants grown in greenhouses
Development and test of optimal control strategies for greenhouse climate and nutrient supply
Publication and presentation of research results
Collaboration with scientists from other disciplines who use the growth chambers and greenhouses at IGZ, leading to joint publications
Acquisition of project funds and scientific supervision of projects related to the topics mentioned above
Active networking and collaboration with national and international partners
A doctoral degree (or proven equivalent achievements) in biosystems engineering, horticulture, agriculture, environmental systems
engineering, engineering science, agricultural engineering or related disciplines
Very good knowledge in greenhouse technology, measurement technology, plant gas exchange, plant production and mathematical modelling of plant growth
Ability to work in a team and experience in international cooperation
Very good knowledge of English; knowledge of German is an advantage
