Tenure Track Position in Optics and Photonics
Optics and Photonics underpins much of modern science and knowledge-intensive technology. This area is one of the strongest research areas of TUT and was promoted to one of its profile areas in the recently updated University Strategy. The area also scored full points in the TUT-wide research evaluation in 2017. Research in Optics and Photonics at TUT will be further strengthened by opening new tenure-track positions during 2018-2020.
Our vision is that the next revolution in photonics will rely on new advanced light sources, on exquisite control of light fields, as well as on new materials with tailorable and tunable optical properties. Advances in these fields will provide new capabilities in the future for multiple application areas such as medicine, communication, solar energy and monitoring of the environment.
We are inviting applications for a tenure-track position in Optics and Photonics. The research profile can be either experimental or theoretical/computational.
We are broadly interested in excellent candidates that can complement our present Optics and Photonics activities. We will give special attention to candidates who have strong expertise in the following subfields or a combination thereof:
Biophotonics and/or applications in life sciences
Novel imaging techniques
Novel photonic materials
Quantum optics and/or quantum technologies
Spectroscopy and optical measurement techniques
Our present activities in Optics and Photonics cover a broad range of topics related to nanostructured photonic materials, novel optoelectronic devices, nonlinear and ultrafast effects as well as optical spectroscopy and measurement techniques. The materials research includes the growth of semiconductor structures by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and supramolecular photoactive materials. In nonlinear optics, we are interested in fundamental questions regarding the nonlinear response of nanostructured materials, nonlinear microscopy and the extreme localization of light into small spatial and temporal scales. The work on spectroscopy is closely connected to industrial and environmental monitoring, and current needs of these application fields.

The position will be filled at the level of Assistant Professor (1st term), Assistant Professor (2nd term) or Associate Professor based on the experience and competence of the successful candidate.
All candidates considered for a tenure track position are expected to:
hold an applicable doctoral degree
demonstrate the capacity for independent scholarly activity
possess the teaching skills required for the successful performance of the duties
have the ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary university environment and with industry.
Depending on the tenure track level, we expect the candidate either to have potential for or hold a demonstrated record of securing external research funding and possess excellent academic credentials. We also expect the candidate to have the competence to develop, lead and maintain a high-quality research programme that leads to national and international recognition.

We also offer assistance for setting up a research group. The extent and conditions of the funding will be discussed with the candidates during the recruitment process.

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees‘ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. In addition, TUT has implemented bonus systems.
The appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a trial period of four months.
The expected start date will be individually negotiated with the candidate.
The positions of Assistant Professor and Associate Professor are filled for a fixed-term period of four years. The length of the fixed-term period is based on the University‘s tenure track system. The appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a trial period of four months.
Candidates may be invited for a video interview during the first stage of the recruitment process. The most qualified candidates will be invited to TUT for an interview with the Tenure Track Working Group and to an aptitude assessment. Potential appointments as Associate Professor will also undergo a review by external experts and are required to give a demonstration of their teaching skills.
