In our group, the software package VASP (Vienna ab-initio Simulation Package) one of the most widely used programs in computational physics and chemistry worldwide, is developed. Currently, the group consists of one full Professor, two assistant Professors, six PostDocs, and four PhD students. Computing time is available on our local cluster as well as on the Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC), a supercomputer shared between the major Universities of Austria. We focus on the development of methods for solving the many-electron Schrödinger equation with high accuracy, and on the application of these methods to problems in the physics of surfaces, semiconductors and oxides.
We seek a candidate expert in theoretical condensed matter physics and in advanced electronic structure approaches, in particular, but not restricted to: computational surface science, polaron and electron-phonon physics, and quantum materials. Candidates with some expertise in developing new computational tools and capable to interact with experimentalists will be given preference. Candidates have an outstanding record and a concrete and original research plan in front-line topics. The position is for six years, during which the candidate is encourage to submit an habilitation.
The recruited candidate will work in the Quantum Material Modelling group, which is part of the Computational Materials Physics Dept. at the University of Vienna (VASP group). Interactions with experimental and theoretical groups in Vienna are highly desirable. All applications shall include i) letter of motivation ii) CV including full academic record iii) list of publications and talks iv) list of courses v) expression of research interest (brief research plan) and research agenda of the intended habilitation (if applicable) (two pages) vi) ideally two names of two references (to be contacted by the selecting committee).
Active participation in research, teaching and administration. This involves - Developing and strengthening the independent research profile - Involvement in research projects / research studies - International publications and presentations - Responsibility for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding - Preparing / writing a (publication-ready) habilitation thesis - Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement - Supervision of students - Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance - Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
Minimum requirement profile
PhD in the field of natural or technical sciences / with focus on solid state physics, theoretical physics - Professional competence: development of ab initio methods, solid state physics - Knowledge based methods competence: Fortran, High performance computing - Good knowledge of principles of teaching - High command of written and spoken English - Computer literacy - Foreign languages: English - Ability to work in teams
Excellent ability to work in team and capability to supervise Bachelor and Master students. Excellent scientific English in written (scientific articles) and verbal (scientific presentations).
