We offer a 6-year university assistant/post-doc position in the field of atmospheric transport modelling. The position will be embedded in the new research group of Prof. Andreas Stohl, which will develop and apply the Lagrangian particle dispersion model FLEXPART (see www.flexpart.eu).
We seek an outstanding candidate with a background in the atmospheric sciences or a related discipline and experience with model and computer code development. The university assistant shall focus his/her research on inverse modelling techniques, developing novel inverse methods and applying them, for example, to determine the fluxes of greenhouse gases (e.g., halocarbons, methane, CO2, etc.) or the emissions of pollutants (e.g., aerosols, microplastics, etc.), utilizing atmospheric in-situ or remote sensing observations or ice core data. Candidates are invited to propose their own ideas for inverse modelling developments and applications. Experience with atmospheric transport modelling, especially with FLEXPART, would be particularly welcome.
At the Department of Meteorology and Geophysics recently three professors have been appointed newly; a fourth professorship position is currently in the process of filling (all in the atmospheric sciences), as is a Tenure Track professorship in Environmental Geophysics. This is creating an exciting international working environment for many new scientists and the opportunity for strong personal development.
Besides research, the successful candidate is also expected to participate in teaching and the supervision of students. Financial support is available for attending international meetings and visiting international research partners.
Participation in research, teaching and administration:
• Development of inverse modelling techniques and their application;
• Research that complements the activities of the group;
• Contributions to project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding;
• Scientific publications and presentations;
• Scientific and technical support of group members;
• Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement;
• Supervision of students;
• Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration.
• Doctoral / PhD degree in meteorology, physics, mathematics, or related subject;
• Good communication skills and ability to work in a team;
• Profound experience in programming, ideally with Fortran or C;
• Proven ability to publish in highly ranked international journals;
• Excellent command of written and spoken English.
Furthermore, the following skills/expertise will be an asset:
• Experience with inverse modelling methods;
• Experience with use of atmospheric transport models;
• Experience in external fundraising;
• Experience in teaching.
