University Assistant (post doc)
at the Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science
Reference number: 11026
The newly founded Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is comprised of 15 groups that conduct internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology and environmental systems science. The Centre's Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science assembles an international, ambitious and committed team and offers an interdisciplinary scientific environment, cutting-edge laboratories and a creative working atmosphere.
The Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science is searching for a University assistant (post doc) with expertise in the field of microbe-virus interactions to support the Department’s research efforts.
The Polz lab at the Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science is looking for a postdoc to study interactions between bacteria and their viral predators (phages). Work will include bacterial and phage isolation, testing of host range, mapping and characterization of phage receptors and resistance mechanisms, as well as quantifying viral and bacterial dynamics in environmental samples. The ultimate goal is to obtain a better understanding of how phage influence microbial population dynamics, and to explore the potential of phage to control bacterial growth. The candidate is expected to drive the research project but also to actively participate in teaching and administration. This includes involvement in research projects/research studies, international publications, and presentations at seminars, workshops and conferences. The supervision of students and teaching as regulated by the collective agreement is expected. We invite applicants to submit their curriculum vitae, letter of intent, and diplomas.
Successful candidates should have a doctoral degree in any field of biology, and should possess considerable computational skills and laboratory experience in microbiology with at least some experience in phage work. A publication record in international peer-reviewed journals documenting these skills is expected.
