University Assistant (prae doc)
at the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics and Quantum Information

Professor Walther's research group is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics and Quantum Information group at the Faculty of Physics. The group's research focus is dedicated to photonic quantum computers and quantum clouds in quantum networks, as well as photonic quantum simulators capable of providing insight into other quantum systems. For our further reinforcement we are looking for a University Assistant (praedoc/PhD student).
The announcement is made for four years, whereby the employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of four years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.
Duration of employment: 4 year/s
Extent of Employment: 30.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
- Participation in research, teaching and administration:
- Participation in research projects / research studies
- Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations
- We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months.
- Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
- Supervision of students
- Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums
- Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration.
The thesis is expected to focus on photonic quantum computer and nonlinear quantum gates based on two-dimensional materials such as graphene. Your position also includes teaching (exercises or lab courses) holding classes due to extent regulations of wage agreement. We invite interested applicants to submit their curriculum vitae, letter of intent, diplomas and certificates, a brief description of your planned dissertation thesis, publication list and list of presentations. The selection will lean on the criteria similar to those defined by the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP) and the PhD program by the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ).
Profile:
- Professional competence: a master or diploma degree in physics, technical physics or equivalent qualification
- Methodological competence : hands- on training in experimental physics. Experience in experimental optics and/or experimental quantum optics.
- Didactic competence: the candidate must be fluent in English, and provide the necessary skills to transfer knowledge and to teach students
- High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- IT user skills
- Ability to work in a team
Desirable qualifications are
- Teaching experience / experience of working with e-learning
- Knowledge of university processes and structures
- Experience abroad
- Basic experience in research methods and academic writing
