The Institute of Geosciences of the Faculty of Chemistry, Pharmacy, and
Geoscience at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz invites applications
for a permanent appointment at the level of a
University Professor (m/f)
of Sedimentary Geochemistry
(Salary class W3 LBesG)
starting in July 2019 with strong expertise in geochemistry, sedimentology and
diagenesis. We look for candidates with an outstanding research record in the
application of geochemical methods for the reconstruction of past climate
variability based on sedimentary archives.
The Institute of Geosciences is equipped with modern analytical, experimental,
computational and teaching facilities and has a dynamic, international research
team. This position is part of a cluster hire that will strengthen the institute's two
main research directions in "Paleoclimatology" and "Dynamics of the Solid Earth",
along with other ongoing faculty searches in Metamorphic Processes, and
We seek a creative individual, who is willing to collaborate across discipline
boundaries and interact with faculty and students. The successful candidate
will complement our existing research strengths, e.g., speleothem research,
sclerochronology, lake sediments and solid earth geoscience. In addition, we
expect the candidate to collaborate with other research institutions on the
Johannes Gutenberg University Campus, such as the Max Planck Institute for
Chemistry and the Institute of Geography. The candidate should have an excellent
track record of high quality and innovative research, successful research funding,
effective teaching and research supervision. We expect the candidate to establish
an internationally leading research group, and to attract external funding, in particular
in joint large research proposals.
The successful candidate is expected to offer courses in the broad fields of
geochemistry, sedimentology and paleoclimatology at the BSc and MSc level,
including field-based methods. Part of the teaching can be done in English, but
we expect the candidate to communicate in German within a reasonable amount
of time. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to participate in service roles
within the institute.
Applicants must meet the general requirements according to public services law
and the Higher Education Act of Rhineland-Palatinate. In addition to a doctoral
degree, a first-rate research record must be proven.
