The Technical University of Munich (TUM) invites applications for the position of

Full Professor
in » Nephrology «

to begin as soon as possible; the position is a tenured W3 position. With the appointment to the Full Professorship, the successful candidate will be appointed as Director of the Department of Nephrology, Rheumatology, and Geriatrics at the TUM University Hospital.

Scientific Environment
The professorship is assigned to the TUM School of Medicine and Health, one of Germany’s leading medical faculties in research and teaching. The TUM University Hospital is an academic center providing tertiary care and is dedicated to scientific excellence. The integration in leading national research networks—including the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK), the Bavarian Center for Cancer Research (BZKF), and the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK)—creates an outstanding scientific environment and enables excellence in teaching and clinical care. Innovation and translation are substantially supported through ideal opportunities for collaboration with scientists and physicians at the TUM University Hospital, with TUM’s data, natural, and life sciences departments, and within the interdisciplinary research landscape of the Munich metropolitan region. Excellent scientific and clinical infrastructure, including state-of-the-art platforms, provides an essential foundation for pioneering research and care.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include research and teaching, the supervision and promotion of early-career researchers, and the leadership and strategic development of clinical care. We are seeking an internationally visible researcher and clinician in clinical-translational nephrology to address innovations and pioneering research questions. A scientific and clinical focus on prevention is considered relevant. Teaching duties include contributions to the field of nephrology as well as participation in the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs at TUM. The appointee will assume leadership of the Department of Nephrology, Rheumatology, and Geriatrics, thereby taking on an important role in patient care and in shaping the future of interdisciplinary patient care and interdisciplinary collaboration with other specialties at TUM University Hospital.

Qualifications
We are looking for candidates with an exceptional international research and teaching reputation and a well-established academic record demonstrated by internationally recognized research contributions. Prerequisites include a university degree, an outstanding doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification, pedagogical aptitude, board certification in internal medicine and nephrology, as well as extensive clinical leadership experience. International research experience, commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, proven ability to acquire and lead collaborative research projects funded by recognized funding bodies (including ERC and DFG), and extensive experience and active engagement in teaching and in equal-opportunity-oriented support for early-career researchers are expected.

Our Offer
TUM provides excellent working conditions in a lively scientific community, embedded in the vibrant research environment of the Greater Munich Area. The TUM environment is multicultural, with English serving as the common language of scientific interaction.
As a rule, the person appointed to this professorship will not be employed as a civil servant (Beamte) under German law. The duties related to patient care as Head of the Department of Nephrology, Rheumatology, and Geriatrics at the TUM University Hospital, including the right to bill for additional medical services, will be regulated separately through a head physician contract with the university hospital’s board of management. A German medical license (Approbation) in human medicine and a German board certification in internal medicine and nephrology are prerequisites for the head physician contract. The TUM Munich Dual Career Office (MDCO) provides tailored career consulting to the partners of newly appointed professors. The MDCO assists with the relocation and integration of newly appointed professors, their partners, and accompanying family members.

Your Application
TUM is an equal opportunity employer and explicitly encourages applications from women and from all qualified candidates who will contribute to the diversity of the university. The position is suitable for persons with disabilities. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of generally equivalent suitability, aptitude, and professional performance.
Application documents should be submitted in accordance with TUM’s application guidelines for professors. These guidelines and detailed information about the TUM Faculty Recruitment and Career System are available at www.tum.de/faculty-recruiting. Here you will also find TUM’s information on the collection and processing of personal data as part of the application process.

Please submit your application by 1 October 2026 via the TUM recruitment portal: www.recruit.tum.de
