The position
We seek to appoint a tenure-track professor to conduct independent research on emerging issues and future challenges related to food safety and food security. This can include the integration of mechanistic and other studies on potential health impacts with innovative analytical approaches for food and feed. Key research areas include, but are not limited to: (i) Food safety including the assessment of co-exposure and mixture effects of food contaminants via innovative in vitro approaches and biomonitoring, (ii) novel and alternative food sources, e.g. insect-based materials, micro- and macroalgae, or meat substitutes, (iii) linking food-derived molecules and contaminants in human samples with health effects using innovative approaches, impact of microbiome on contaminant biotransformation; (iv) AI and chemometrics in food chemistry. The candidate should not have a research focus in food technology/processing or nutritional sciences. In teaching, the position will contribute to different study programs, inter alia the Master’s program in Food Chemistry, which is unique in the Austrian academic landscape.
In addition to the professors at the Department of Food Chemistry and Toxicology, there are strong links within the faculty to the core facilities for mass spectrometry and multimodal imaging. The faculty also hosts the Doctoral School in Chemistry (DoSChem), whose mission is to equip doctoral students with state-of-the-art experimental, statistical, and computational methods to address complex challenges in chemistry and beyond. Beyond the Faculty, the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the Faculty of Life Sciences, the Exposome Austria Research Infrastructure and the Research Network “Health in Society” provide extensive opportunities for cooperation with researchers from other departments at the University of Vienna.

Your academic profile:
- Doctoral degree/PhD
- Two years of international research experience during or after doctoral studies
- Outstanding research achievements, excellent publication and funding record, international reputation
- Gender and diversity competence
- Experience in designing of and participating in research projects, ability to lead research groups and acquire third-party funding
- Enthusiasm for excellent teaching and supervision at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level
We expect the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor's programmes and for participation in university committees.
