About

The Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML) is a joint research initiative of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and Technische Universität München (TUM). It is one of six nationwide AI centers in Germany to receive permanent funding as part of the German and Bavarian government's AI strategy. Our vision is to strengthen regional, national and international competence in AI and to make the corresponding potential accessible to users from science and industry.

The MCML seeks applications for two Junior Research Group Leader positions in Machine Learning. One position will be hosted at LMU and the other at TUM. The JRG position is remunerated according to the German TV-L system; it is an E15 (100%) level position. The position will run initially for three years, with a possible extension, depending on review.

Your tasks

As a JRG group leader, you will develop an original research project in a field related to one of the three research areas of MCML: Foundations of Machine Learning; Perception, Vision, and NLP; and Domain-Specific Machine Learning. You will lead a research group for which you are expected to hire two PhD students (both TV-L E 13), who will be funded by MCML.

Your profile

  • Outstanding PhD in the area of informatics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, mathematics, statistics, data science, or physics
  • Outstanding track record, demonstrated by high-impact publications in top venues of machine learning or related fields
  • Excellent communication skills, fluency in English (written and oral)
  • Experience in mentoring M.Sc. or B.Sc. students / running a research team

Your benefits

You will join one of the top AI research centers in Germany and in Europe with access to an excellent network of scholars and scientists. MCML currently has 45 principal investigators working in one of our three core research areas. LMU and TUM offer high-caliber research facilities with extensive support for developing innovative and cutting-edge research projects.

The MCML funding includes the position of the PI (TV-L E15) and two PhD students (TV-L E13). Your office will be located at either LMU Munich (Faculty for Mathematics, Informatics or Statistics) or TUM on the Garching campus. The position is a TVL-E15 position in the German TV-L system (based on the tariff contracts for public service, commensurate with experience). The position is for three years, with the possibility of extension upon re-evaluation. Working hours are flexible.

LMU Munich and TUM provide diverse benefits for its employees, including support for scientists from overseas. Details can be found on both the LMU and TUM websites.

Your application

Please apply via our application portal by 15 June 2023; the Portal closes at 23:59 CET.

You will need to submit the following:

●        A motivation letter (1-2 pages)

●        An academic CV including Google Scholar link

●        A research project proposal (3-4 pages)

●        Names and contact information of two references

●        Contact: Please send any inquiries to application@mcml.ai.

Both LMU and TUM are interested in increasing female faculty members; women are encouraged to apply. This position is also possible in a part-time capacity. People with disabilities who are equally as qualified as other applicants will receive preferential treatment.
