Postdoc in Wind Turbine Drivetrain Bearing Design

The Department of Wind Energy at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Wind Energy) has a 2-year post-doctoral position opening in the area of Wind turbine drivetrain dynamics and gearbox bearing load computations with a focus in multi-body simulations and life prediction under White Etching Cracks.

The position is in the section Wind Turbine Structures and Components Design (SAC) at DTU Wind Energy.

Responsibilities and tasks
This position requires the candidate to be able to scientifically investigate different types of bearing configurations within wind turbine gearboxes using multi-body load simulations coupled to the wind turbine to assess dynamic bearing roller loads and slippage of rollers. The load simulations will be based on measured operational conditions and IEC standard cases used in the design of wind turbines. The simulated loads would need to be validated with acquired turbine load measurements at points on the drivetrain and also as input to further laboratory tests that show the development of white etching cracks (WEC) on bearings. Based on developed relevant criteria, a life prediction model for wind turbine gearbox bearings subject to WEC needs to be developed.

A PhD in Wind Energy or similar discipline is required. Applicants should have excellent analytical skills and the ability to work independently towards the research goals. A good knowledge of at least one mechanical design software package is expected. A strong computational mechanics background is required along with a background in one or more of the following disciplines:

  • Structural mechanics
  • Wind turbine loads prediction
  • Multi-body dynamics
  • Structural Reliability
Further strong communication and presentation skills are required to effectively communicate research findings, as well as a good knowledge of technical English writing.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years.
