The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.
With a starting date as soon as possible, the Quantum Technology Competence Center (QTZ) is looking for a candidate to fill the following position at PTB’s Braunschweig or Berlin site for a fixed term
ending 31 December 2025:

Your tasks:
In collaboration with the German Federal Office for Information Security (
Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik - BSI),
the
QTZ at PTB is coordinating the umbrella project for quantum communication in Germany known as
SQuaD (
Schirmprojekt Quantenkommunikation Deutschland). The aim of the SQuaD project is to bring together research and industry
stakeholders in the field of quantum communication (QCom) from across Germany and to work with industry-led implementation projects within the Innovation Hub for Quantum Communication
programme in building a thriving and secure quantum communication ecosystem. Working in close collaboration with Section TK 21 at the BSI, your duties as a member of the QTZ team will include:
- Independently coordinating the SQuaD project, acting as a central contact point for setup and organization for SQuaD and QCom in Germany, with focus on metrological aspects:
- Building, growing and maintaining the SQuaD structure and organization
- Linking and coordinating with associated groups and networks as well as with funding bodies
- Collaborating with industry-led projects within the Innovation Hub for Quantum Communication programme
- Coordination of testbeds and expansion of testbeds within the SQuaD framework
- Closely cooperating and consulting with the BSI as coordination partner
- Assisting in the development of norms and standards as well as certification as part of the SQuaD project in close cooperation with the BSI and DIN
- Providing support and assistance as required in the following areas:
- Collaboration and networking platform
- Networking, innovation promotion and technology transfer, in particular with the stakeholders in the umbrella project
- Knowledge transfer, scientific communication and outreach, in particular with the stakeholders in the umbrella project
- Qualitative monitoring, roadmapping and trend analysis
Your profile:
- You have completed your university studies (Master’s or German Diplom) in physics with at least the grade good and have obtained a doctorate related to quantum communication or general quantum physics.
- Ideally, you have experience with experimental work in quantum physics or quantum technologies.
- You are highly committed and well organized.
- You are willing to continuously improve your skills.
- You are interested in and have the aptitude for taking on management duties.
- You are a strong team player with excellent communication skills.
- You demonstrate a high degree of self-confidence and assertiveness.
- You enjoy independent scientific work.
- You have a very good command of both spoken and written English and German
- You are willing to travel within Germany and abroad within the scope of your assignment.
