The University of Cologne Köln
The University of Cologne, Germany, invites applications for a faculty position at Assistant / Associate Professor (W1/W2) level with Tenure Track (W2)

Assistant / Associate Professorship (W1/W2) in Health Management with Tenure Track (W2)

This call is part of the Tenure Track Program of the German Federal Government and the Federal States. It addresses researchers at an early career stage.
The University of Cologne is one of the largest universities in Germany. It conducts internationally competitive research and covers a wide range of subjects. With its six Faculties and its interaculty centers, it offers a broad spectrum of academic disciplines and internationally outstanding profile areas. The position is based in the Faculty of Management, Economics, and Social Sciences which is consistently ranked among the top schools in research and teaching.
The position is available as of April 2020 or based on mutual agreement (latest September 2020).
Depending on previous achievements, the successful candidate starts at W1 or W2 level. W1 positions are intended for early career researchers who have developed an individual research agenda that shows potential for a distinguished research career. Applicants for W1 should have – or be close to completing – a PhD and will have demonstrated strong potential in their research. W2 positions are intended for early career researchers who have already proven the potential to conduct and publish independent research of excellent quality.
We invite applications from strong candidates in Health Care Management and Health Economics. They should have a research focus in Empirical Health Care Management, Medical Decision Making, or Behavioral Health Economics with emphasis on managerial issues. The successful candidate should have published (W2) or signal a strong trajectory (W1) to publish also in TOP journals of general interest in management. Candidates are expected to integrate their work into the collaborative research environment of the faculty. Furthermore, candidates are expected to cooperate with colleagues from the Medical Faculty and should have experience (W2) or show potential (W1) in raising research funds (e. g. in the field of Health Services Research) and applying for highly ranked interdisciplinary research programs.
The successful candidate will teach in the health related Bachelor‘s/Master‘s/PhD programs with a focus on Health Care Management and Health Systems. The teaching languages are English (Master/PhD) and German (Bachelor). Candidates who are not sufficiently fluent in German will initially be assigned to teach in English but should be willing to acquire the skills necessary to lecture in German within three years. International teaching and research experience is appreciated.
Applicants will be hired in accordance with § 36 of the University Law of the State of North-Rhine Westphalia. In case of W1 hiring, in the third year after entering into office, an interim evaluation is held. This serves as the basis for the decision as to whether an extension for a further three years will be granted to the candidate. At the latest, a final evaluation is held in the sixth year after entering into office. On this basis, a decision will be reached as to whether the candidate will be given tenure at W2 level. The teaching load will be four hours per week (i. e. two 90-minute courses per semester) in the first qualification phase and five hours per week in the second. In case of W2 hiring, at the latest in the fifth year after entering into office, a final evaluation will be held, deciding whether the candidate will be given tenure at W2 level. Every evaluation is carried out according to the Regulations for Quality Assurance in Tenure Track Procedures at the University of Cologne.
The University of Cologne is committed to increase the share of women in research and teaching. Applications of women are specifically invited. In the case of equal qualifications, competence and specific achievements, women will be considered on preferential terms within the framework of the legal possibilities. The University of Cologne is an equal opportunity employer in compliance with the German disabilities laws. Persons with disabilities are therefore strongly encouraged to apply.
The application should consist of the following documents: cover letter, curriculum vitae including a list of publications and grants, a teaching record and evaluations, and a job market paper (only W1). Applications should be submitted via the Academic Job Portal of the University of Cologne (https://professorships.uni-koeln.de/) no later than 5th of December, 2019 addressing the Dean of the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences. For further information, please contact Professor Kuntz (kuntz(at)wiso.uni-koeln.de).
