The Department of Physics at Columbia University seeks to appoint an assistant professor in the area of experimental condensed matter or optical physics or a related
field starting on July 1, 2019. The appointment is pursued jointly with the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) at Hamburg, Germany.
The successful candidate will spend the initial 5 years of the appointment as a junior group leader at MPSD and will then come to Columbia as a tenure-track junior
Separate applications must be submitted to each institution. Applications must include: a cover letter, Curriculum Vitae (including a publication list), and brief statements
of research plans and teaching philosophy. Candidates should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent on their behalf to each institution.
It is expected that the candidate will develop a vigorous independent research program, continuing the long Columbia and Max Planck Society records of forefront
accomplishment in science. Applicants must possess a doctoral degree in Physics or a related field and have demonstrated the ability to do pioneering experimental
research as well as the promise of excellence in teaching and mentoring at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Review of applications and scheduling of interviews will begin December 15, 2018 and will continue until the position is filled.
