Assistant Professorship (Juniorprofessorship) (W1/W2) of Organic Chemistry
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
The Faculty of Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Geography, and
Geoscience of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) invites applications
for a tenure-track appointment at the level of
Assistant Professor (Juniorprofessor)
of Organic Chemistry
(W1 with tenure-track to a W2 position; LBesG)
starting in 2020. Candidates with research foci in contemporary fields of organic
chemistry, especially bioorganic chemistry, simulation of sustainable reaction
pathways, organic chemistry of renewable resources, or electro-conversion, are
encouraged to apply. The Faculty plans to strengthen the emerging field of
sustainable and resource-saving chemistry. Collaborations within existing and
planned research fields are strongly encouraged.
Chemistry in Mainz offers cutting-edge analytical, experimental, computational,
and teaching facilities and has a dynamic, as well as very international research
team. This position in organic chemistry is part of a cluster hire together with a
complementary position in the field of inorganic chemistry.
We are seeking an outstanding creative individual with the willingness to collaborate
across departmental boundaries and to interact with faculty as well as students. We
expect the candidate to complement our existing research strengths, especially in the
fields of catalytic, photochemical, electrochemical, and/or innovative resource-saving
chemical methods. The ideal candidate gives reason to expect him/her to become a
leader in the research field, attracting external research funding, and developing a
high-quality teaching and research supervision program. Fundamental and advanced
organic chemistry must be taught at BSc, MSc, BEd, and MEd levels. Advanced
classes can be taught in English. However, we expect the ability to teach introductory
classes in German, at least after the interim evaluation. Furthermore, the successful
candidate is expected to actively involve himself/herself in academic administration.
The professorship is funded by the Tenure Track program of the German federal
and state governments. Researchers early in their career are therefore particularly
encouraged to apply. Applicants must meet the general requirements according
to public services law and the Higher Education Act of Rhineland-Palatinate
(§§ 54, 55 Hochschulgesetz - Higher Education Act). The initial contract will run
for three years and will be extended for another three years, contingent upon a
successful interim evaluation. After a final successful evaluation as junior professor
after six years, and provided that the general requirements are fulfilled, the
candidate will qualify for appointment to a tenured full professorship (W2).
The State of Rhineland-Palatinate and JGU are committed to intensive personal
mentoring for students and, therefore, expect a strong presence of teaching staff
at the University. JGU aims to increase the quota of women in research and teaching,
and hence encourages female scientists to apply. Disabled candidates with
appropriate qualifications will be given priority.
Interested applicants should send a document comprising a cover letter, CV, degree
certificates, overview of teaching experience, publication list, a statement outlining
the planned research, potential collaborations, and teaching directions, and a filled
application form (available for download at
https://www.fb09.uni-mainz.de/offene-positionen) as well as copies of up to five key publications. Applications
should be sent electronically as a single PDF file by October 18, 2019 to
