The Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER) is an interdisciplinary publicly funded
research institute devoted to applied empirical research in economic, social and spatial sciences with
research focussed across three departments: Labour Market; Urban Development and Mobility; and Living
Conditions. With an annual budget of circa €18.5 million and around 130 employees, 65 of whom are
researchers from the fields of economics, sociology, political sciences and geography, the Institute
attracts top researchers from all over the world and high-level student training is a vivid part of
its activities. Based on its scientific expertise and high academic reputation, the Institute addresses
current and future societal challenges and provides relevant and independent policy advice both on the
national and European level.
LISER is now seeking to appoint two new Heads for their Departments of Labour Market & Urban Development and
Mobility. With a proven ability to construct and develop creative teams for innovative and competitive research,
the successful appointees will design and lead the research strategy of their respective departments as well as
its multi-year performance program while also participating in the strategic positioning of LISER and the Department
within the national and European research landscape.
With strong communication skills and a broad international network s/he will be an outstanding internationally-recognised
researcher in their field with demonstrable leadership and management experience, and the ability to represent and promote
LISER to public authorities, private organisations, stakeholders and collaborating partners both nationally and on the
global-stage. Each Head of Department will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to policy advice as well as
the ability to promote the impact of research results to policy makers and society in general. The successful appointees
must hold a PhD in a related field, or equivalent recognised scientific competences, will have outstanding management
skills, a substantial experience in generating a high level of research income, innovative high impact scientific output,
and advancing current knowledge in multidisciplinary fields. Due to the multi-linguistic culture in Luxembourg and the
Institute, in addition to English, knowledge of one or more of the official languages of Luxembourg (Luxemburgish/French/German)
will be regarded as an asset.
