Junior Research Fellowship
The Institute of Advanced Studies, University College London, and the German Historical Institute
London intend to appoint a joint Stipendiary Junior Research Fellow, tenable for a period of six
months from 15 September 2017. The purpose of the Junior Research Fellowship is to offer an outstanding
early career scholar from a German university the opportunity to pursue independent research in the
stimulating intellectual environment of the two host institutions.
Applications are invited from postdoctoral academics with an excellent research record. The fellowship is
open to those working in any of the subjects that have a strong research base at the Institute of Advanced
Studies and the German Historical Institute London (GHIL) such as history, art history and literary studies.
There are no restrictions on nationality. Applicants, however, have to be affiliated to a German university
or non-university research institution. They must also have obtained their doctorate and will normally have
no more than five years postdoctoral research experience in an academic environment.
Fellows will be expected to take up their residence in London for the duration of the fellowship and give
presentations on their research project at both institutions. Fellows have the opportunity, but no obligation
to organize a workshop on their chosen topic. To allow the fellow to focus on carrying out research, there are
no teaching or administrative duties associated with the fellowship.
The non-pensionable and tax-free stipend will be 3,000 € per month. During the fellowship the fellows have to be
on unpaid leave from their home institutions.
The successful candidate will be provided with work space at the Institute of Advanced Studies, University College
London, and will also have full access to the research facilities at both the Institute of Advanced Studies and the
German Historical Institute London. Both institutions, however, cannot provide accommodation during the fellowship.
Applicants should send a CV, details of their proposed research project (maximum length 1000 words), a sample of
their written work and the names of two referees in one PDF-file to the Deputy Director of the GHIL, Dr Michael
Schaich (firstname.lastname@example.org), by 1 May 2017.
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of the director of the Institute of Advanced Studies,
a representative of the German Department of University College London and a representative of the German Historical
Institute London. Unfortunately, the Institute of Advanced Studies and the German Historical Institute London are unable
to provide feedback for the applicants who are not selected.
Enquiries about the Junior Research Fellowship should be made to Dr Michael Schaich
