For our institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology in Göttingen, we wish to recruit a qualified

Noise immission prediction of novel electrified transport aircraft concepts Your mission:
DLR is investigating low-noise aircraft design. An overall design process with integrated noise prediction capabilities has been developed and validated. The process has been applied to identify promising low-noise aircraft concepts with the focus on realizable, medium term solutions (see Fig.). Currently, simulation capabilities are enhanced and simulation tools of different fidelities are applied to investigate more unconventional aircraft concepts for medium range missions.
Recently, more and more research activities and industrial approaches toward a more electric aviation have been launched. Significantly different concepts are under investigation, ranging from fully-electric short range air taxis to large medium range aircraft with hybrid-electric propulsion concepts. To this point, few detailed noise assessment of any of these concepts has been published in the scientific literature. It can be expected, that vehicles with electric propulsion concepts might not only have different noise emission but might also enable more flexible flight procedures with significantly different noise immission.
We are offering a doctoral candidate position in this challenging and exciting research area. You will work in a highly professional environment and simultaneously pursue your PhD degree from a partner university.
The following job description can be understood as a basic guideline towards the final PhD thesis topic:
capability assessment of existing simulation process toward novel concepts and electrification of existing concepts (e.g., see Fig.): aircraft architecture, engine design, flight performance, and noise prediction
definition of input data quality for noise prediction of the novel concepts; identification of existing simulation gaps
implementation of required improvements toward novel aircraft concepts and retrofit measures for existing concepts: noise source modeling, vehicle design, and flight performance
application of updated simulation process to advanced electric and more electric transport aircraft concepts
documentation of results in scientific papers / journals and presentations on international conferences / workshops
The main goal of the PhD-position is to enable a feasible and reliable noise immission prediction for novel
vehicles with hybrid- or fully electric propulsion concepts. Research toward aircraft and engine design, flight
performance, and noise source simulation of these new vehicles becomes essential. The DLR fellowship is
limited to 3 years with the possibility of extension. Entry salary is TVÖD level E13 (50% as a PhD candidate;
starts around 1100 €/month after deductions).
