PhD in Nanotechnology: towards analysis and determination of antimicrobial resistance

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden‘s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 44.000 students, 7.100 employees and a turnover of SEK 7 billion.
The Division of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials is today part of the Department of Engineering Sciences. As of 2020-01-01 the Department of Engineering Sciences will be divided in three new departments. The Division of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials will belong to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
Project description and work duties: Antimicrobial resistance is an increasing concern for our global health and in Europe alone, about 25,000 people may die each year from infections related to antimicrobial resistant bacteria. The present project aims to bring forward a low-cost and easy-to-use diagnostic method, which can serve as an efficient analytical platform for rapid detection and characterization of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The detection method is combines analysis of changes in rotation dynamics of bio-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles with a detection approach which applies padlock probe ligation technique and rolling circle amplification of the probed bacteria pathogen. This project is truly interdisciplinary, where molecular biology is implemented together with chemistry, physics and nanotechnology.
The project includes detection of different types of bacterial genomes that may have built up antimicrobial resistance. The work also includes optimizing the biomolecular protocols and optimizing the binding between nanoparticles and the DNA molecules with the aim of maximizing the sensitivity of the detection method. It may also be relevant for the applicant to become involved in the work of implementing the biomolecular protocols in microfluidic format in order to provide a complete detection system.
The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).
Qualifications: The applicant should ideally have a MSc in molecular biotechnology engineering or similar disciplines related to the research field. The applicant should ideally have a strong background in molecular biotechnology and should be interested in applying these skills towards this interdisciplinary project. Experience in biosensors and diagnostic/detection techniques is an advantage.
Due to the collaborative nature of this project, good communication skills are required. A high proficiency in spoken and written English is essential. We are searching for a motivated, enthusiastic and structured PhD student that has the ability to work efficiently both individually and in groups.
Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:
  • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university‘s rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English
Application: The application should contain a brief description of the research interests and relevant experience, CV, publication list, copies of diplomas and grades, thesis work (or a draft thereof) and other relevant documents.
