livMatS develops completely novel, bioinspired materials systems that adapt autonomously to various environments and harvest clean energy from their surroundings. The intention of these purely technical – yet in a behavioral sense quasi-living – materials systems is to meet the demands of humans with regard to pioneering environmental and energy technologies. The societal relevance of autonomous systems and their sustainability will thus play an important role in their development. The research program of
livMatS is characterized by highly interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers from a broad range of fields including engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, psychology, the humanities, and sustainability sciences.
Project Description The project is entitled “Development, characterisation and integration of flexible solar modules as energy supply unit in a
livMatS demonstrator”. For this, tailored flexible organic solar modules and flexible perovskite solar modules will be developed. In particular their size and shape will need to be adapted to the specific layout of the demonstrators as they are going to be an integral part of the latter. Moreover, the energy harvesting functionality of the modules has to be robust, i.e., they have to deliver electrical power also under low intensity indoor light. Another aspect relevant for the application in the
livMatS demonstrators is a partial visual transparency of the solar skins which can be realized in particular using organic absorber materials. Furthermore, to ensure longevity/resilience in these systems, compartmentalisation will be explored as a strategy, so that in case of failure not the entire module but just a compartment will fail. For the first part of the project, existing technologies for flexible solar module fabrication will be adapted to the needs of the
livMatS demonstrators. In addition, the adapted modules will be improved in terms of their functionality (transparency, low illumination performance, resilience). In the second part of the project, the integration of flexible solar-charging supercapacitors, based on the monolithical combination of solar modules with for example flexible carbon-based supercapacitors will be approached, adding an energy storage functionality to the solar modules.
Expected Candidate Profile
Very well completed university master studies in physics, chemistry, material science, engineering science or a related subject
Experience in wet chemical processing and characterization of thin films and/or characterization of semiconductor devices is an advantage
Very good written and spoken English skills
Knowledge of German language not mandatory, but advantageous
You should be: highly motivated, capable of independent and critical thinking, independent working, smoothly integrating into an international research group
