The newly founded Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy (HI ERN) is part of
Forschungszentrum Jülich and works in close collaboration with the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität
Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. The research at HI ERN focuses on the areas of
innovative materials and processes for hydrogen technologies, photovoltaic energy and solar fuels,
therefore covering novel approaches for the conversion and storage of CO2-neutral energy.
We are offering two
PhD Positions in Renewable Energy / Electrocatalysis
The successful candidates will be part of the Electrocatalysis unit of the HI ERN led by Prof. Dr. Karl
Mayrhofer. The research groups within the Electrocatalysis unit focus on the activity, stability and
selectivity of electrocatalyst materials, which play the essential role in sustainable technologies like
water- and CO2-electrolyzers, as well as in fuel cells. We utilize internationally unique material and
process characterization methods which are based on the sophisticated coupling of novel electrochemical
techniques with online analytical tools. Thereby the aim is to significantly contribute to the development
of electrochemical energy conversion as a future key player for electromobility and the energy policy in
The available PhD positions are related to the following topics:
Activity of electrocatalyst materials for water splitting and low-temperature fuel cells
Electrochemical conversion of CO2 to value-added chemicals
Stability of anode catalysts for water electrolyzers (oxygen evolution reaction)
Development of novel techniques for the high-throughput material characterization
The applicants are welcome to mention their preference to one of the above topics in their cover letter.
Excellent university degree in Chemistry/Physics/Chemical Engineering/Material Science or a relevant discipline
Strong interest in pursuing research in electrochemistry and electrocatalysis with relevance to energy conversion
Previous experience in one (or more) of the following: electrochemistry, material characterization, analytical chemistry, chemical reactors
High motivation for pursuing a PhD within 3 years
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to show initiative and work independently
Excellent cooperation and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
Excellent skills in spoken and written English
An excellent environment to perform sound, high-quality research at the international level
Daily, hands-on experience in worldwide-unique electrochemical characterization techniques
Excellent training in electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, material preparation/characterization, analytical chemistry
