Luleå University of Technology
PhD Position in Urban Water Engineering - Small sanitation systems Luleå
The Urban Water Research Group at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering at Luleå University of Technology seeks a driven and committed PhD student with focus on small sanitation systems.
The Urban Water Research Group has a strong position in research and education within the area of urban water systems mainly regarding stormwater, wastewater and sewer systems. Being a part of the Urban Water Research Group implies working in an international and creative environment. The group consists of a number of senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors and about 15 doctoral candidates. The group has an extensive national and international collaboration network. The group's overall aim is to contribute to the development of sustainable urban water systems.
Urban Water Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (stormwater, drinking water and wastewater) including collection, transport and treatment, as well as organisation and planning. Our research aims at encouraging a clean environment and the efficient use of resources, while preserving public health and safety.
In Sweden, a considerable amount of wastewater is treated in small-scale rural treatment facilities. The treatment process mainly aims at reducing the concentrations of BOD, pathogens and nutrients. However, many facilities malfunction, e.g. because of errors in the construction, operational issues or lack of maintenance. Additionally, small-scale systems are subject to large variations in load which affects their efficiency, e.g. at tourist centres. This project aims at investigating the treatment efficiency and the environmental effects of small-scale wastewater systems, i.a. through evaluation of water samples from the treatment process and from the receiving natural waters. Furthermore, innovative small-scale solutions for recovery of energy and/or nutrients are discussed and evaluated for their potential application in Northern Scandinavia.
The project is carried out in collaboration with Oulu University and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) as well as with producers and authorities. Research visits at Oulu University are planned.
The PhD candidate is expected to independently plan and carry out his/her studies and field work. Further tasks include the writing of scientific papers and the doctoral thesis as well as the participation in Swedish and international conferences. The PhD candidate is supported by two supervisors during the research studies. Third-cycle education also includes courses that the PhD candidate must attend.
The applicant shall hold a second-cycle degree (MSc, fully completed course requirements of at least 240 ETCS of which at least 60 ETCS at an advanced level, or equivalent) in environmental/civil engineering or comparable. English language skills are required to facilitate the candidate's presentation of research outcomes at international conferences and in scientific journals. Further skills needed are the ability to work independently and take own initiatives as well as independently advance into new research areas. Experience and/or education in the field of sanitary/urban water engineering, field work and sampling, systems analysis, statistical data analysis as well as Swedish language skills are beneficial. We expect the applicant to hold or make a driving license to facilitate field work.
The applicant should be able provide contact details of two referees on request.
The position includes a fulltime fixed-term employment for 4 years (up to max 5 years) regulated by the Swedish Higher Education Act. Departmental duties, such as administration and/or lecturing on basic and advanced level may be added up to 20 % of fulltime. Monthly salary according to LTU salary agreement for PhD candidates.
