The Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology IWES Northwest covers applied research
and development for the complete wind-power value chain. Its particular strength lies in the combination of a
worldwide unique test infrastructure with extensive expertise in reliability and validation. With more than
250 employees and students at its headquarter in Bremerhaven as well as at its branches in Hanover, Bremen
and Oldenburg, IWES Northwest serves national and international clients. We are looking to fill the above-mentioned
position in the department »Aerodynamics, CFD and Stochastic Dynamics« in Oldenburg at the next available
What we expect from you
You have successfully completed a degree in Physics, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Technology
and earned a doctorate or gathered extensive professional or research experience in the field of wind energy site
assessment. You have also garnered considerable experience in the use of CFD simulations, in particular OpenFOAM,
and have additional expertise in the field of wind energy. We expect an independent approach to work combined with
interdisciplinary thinking as well as a readiness for action, creativity, and flexibility. Also essential are
good organizational skills and the willingness to work within a team, both within the institute and in the scope
of cooperation with external partners. As a great deal of the varied work we conduct at Fraunhofer IWES is
performed at an international level, excellent written and spoken English is a prerequisite, as is the readiness
to learn German.
Does programming using OpenFOAM come naturally to you? Is object orientation in programming simply a matter of course?

What you can expect from us
Your duties will comprise numerical wind field calculations for wind energy sites, with particular emphasis on the
effects of atmospheric turbulence. For this, you will perform development tasks for the wind industry using methods
taken from computational fluid dynamics (CFD), in order to improve wind forecasts at complex locations. This involves
not only the further development of turbulence models and solvers, but also pre-processing and post-processing.

The position is initially limited for 3 years.
