Scientific project manager (permanent position) -
EU project management (ocean and climate science)
There is a vacancy for a permanent position as scientific project manager at the
Geophysical Institute. The position is associated with the project EU H2020 COMFORT. 75 % of the position will be financed through this project for the first 48 months. The rest of the position is connected to an internal project to strengthen research administrative processes linked to contract follow-up.
The main task for this position is to become the Project Manager for the COMFORT project “Our common future ocean in the Earth system – quantifying coupled cycles of carbon, oxygen, and nutrients for determining and achieving safe operating spaces with respect to tipping points,” which is a central European research project aiming to provide added value to decision and policy makers in terms of science-based safe marine operating spaces, refined climate mitigation targets, and feasible long-term mitigation pathways. The project has 32 partners from Europe, Africa, Canada, and India.
About the project/work tasks:
The candidate will assist the project director of COMFORT on all matters concerning the scientific management of the project (the financial management will be dealt with by respective other consultants). The tasks include:
- Develop a plan for communication, establish and execute the internal and external communication
- Developing the plan for exploitation and dissemination
- Help in coordinating the work between the different work packages
- Following-up the project activities, in particular, ensuring that all deliverables as well as milestones are provided in time
- Compilation of periodic reports.
- Organisation of project meetings.
- Networking with other international and national projects as well as agencies in the field.
- Help in coordinating the work between the different work packages
- Following-up ethical requirements and the obligation to publish in open access mode.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
Key requirements:
- Applicants must have achieved a Norwegian PhD within higher education within oceanography, meteorology, physics, mathematics, biology, geology, or related fields, or must have achieved equivalent education abroad
- In-depth familiarity with the process of scientific research in the climate and ocean sciences.
- Excellent communication skills with various stakeholders and across disciplines.
- A high level of writing skills and in particular the ability to formulate easy to understand texts for dissemination to (a) experts and (b) non-experts.
- Proficiency in both written and oral English.
- Excellent team working skills (with respect to e.g. diplomacy, patience, problem solving, efficient delegation of tasks).
- Ability to approach and organise complex tasks in a structured manner.
- Self-confidence and ability to work under tight time frames (resilience to stress).
Highly desirable are further:
- Previous experience in management of large scientific projects.
- Scientific expertise in ocean and climate science, in particular in marine biogeochemical cycles.
- Experience in scientific publishing with special emphasis on open access publishing.
- Experience in programming/maintenance of websites.
- In-depth knowledge of the EU funding system.
- Experience with the EU participant portal.
- Travelling must be expected
- Awareness of environmentally friendly management procedures and reductions of the carbon foot print

- Position as Advisor (code 1434) Salary at pay grade 57-64 in the state salary scale. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 497 000 - 565 500. Higher salaries may be considered for particularly highly qualified applicants.
