The Division of Health Economics is seeking to fill
Scientist Positions in Applied Health Economics
A new scientific unit for health economics was established by the DKFZ effective January 2017. Located on the
biomedical campus in Heidelberg, it is embedded in a highly attractive environment offering a broad spectrum
of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations. Beyond excellent research conditions, the DKFZ and the
University of Heidelberg offer an international and collegial scientific environment and access to state-of-the-art core facilities.
Consistent with the preeminent role of the DKFZ in the field of cancer research, the health economics team will be committed
to making significant policy-relevant contributions to our understanding of the economic implications of cancer. The health
economics unit will be dedicated to the study of the costs and benefits, including cost benefit, cost effectiveness,
and social cost value analyses of malignant diseases and of health care interventions.
We are seeking now both junior and experienced candidates, ideally with a Ph.D. in economics or a related social sciences field
(as a minimum, with a relevant master’s degree), with an emphasis in applications of
a) econometric techniques (notably, panel data analysis)
b) operations research methods and decision analytic modeling (such as multi-criteria decision analysis, Bayesian analysis, Markov models, discrete event simulation)
c) statistical data analysis (including management of complex databases),
d) preference measurement techniques (such as discrete choice experiments, time trade-off, standard gamble, qualitative and quantitative survey methods).
You should have exceptional analytical skills and be able to structure complex projects. You should be prepared
to work in an enthusiastic team with a strong cooperative spirit that is characterized by ambitious performance
norms. Combined with high levels of mutual support and loyalty. You will be a collaborative team member, capable
of striving in a highly committed team within the framework of a large research organization. Depending on your
research focus, you will be familiar with at least some of the following technical tools: SQL databases, SAS,
Stata, Eviews, SPSS, DATA TreeAge, PubMed / embase.
We will offer you an opportunity to learn and grow your skillset by owning the following scientific tasks
assist with, oversee, initiate or conduct studies in one or more of the fields mentioned above (for example, cost of illness studies, cost benefit / cost effectiveness / cost value analyses, utility and preference measurement)
prepare near-final or final drafts of study protocols, basic report sections, reports, and manuscripts
maintain familiarity with current scientific literature, co-author and author presentations for scientific conferences and manuscripts for scientific journals
write and/or review project proposals and grant applications, including budgets
The positions are initially limited to two years, with
possibility for extension. The positions can
in principle be part-time.
