We invite applications for a Senior Scientist (PostDoc) (m/f). The position is full time, fixed term 4,5 years.
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) is developing biodegradable Mg-based implant materials for various applications. The focus is on musculoskeletal indications;
cardiovascular and other tissue applications are approached as well. The research centre covers the full value chain from material development, characterisation, processing
(cast and powder metallurgical routes) and prototype production towards degradation under physiological conditions and in vitro cell culture assessment. This will be
complemented by in vivo studies performed in the frame of the newly installed HZG outstation in Kiel and the multimodal imaging capacities of the Molecular Imaging North
Competence Center MOIN CC (www.moincc.de).
The position requires a university degree in the field of natural science or medicine and a PhD in an appropriate discipline.
For this HZG outstation we are seeking an expert whose profile includes:
a profound understanding of how biomaterials are interacting with tissue and in turn how the body is reacting towards a biomaterial. A central part of the work will be the elucidation of the influence of Mg degradation on tissue in vivo (inflammation, foreign body reaction, bone remodelling). This will be combined with ex situ tomography and diffraction experiments performed in cooperation with colleagues at the PETRAIII synchrotron, Hamburg.
experience with Mg as biomaterial. Since this is a new class of material, which can e.g. by ion release (Mg and alloying elements) interfere with metabolic pathways, a plethora of local and systemic reactions can be expected. The ultimate goal is the understanding of how the pathophysiology of patients is related to the success of Mg as implant material.
experience with at least one of the following techniques: MRI/MRS, (?)CT, histology or immunohistochemistry.
experience in writing grant applications and managing international scientific projects and networks.
excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Communication skills in German would be beneficial.
willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team in Germany.
experience in the analysis of multimodal data sets or translatory aspects is desirable for to bring Mg materials into the clinic.
