The newly founded Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is comprised of 15 groups that conduct internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology and environmental systems science. The Centre's Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science assembles an international, ambitious and committed team and offers an interdisciplinary scientific environment, cutting-edge laboratories and a creative working atmosphere.
The Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science is looking for a dedicated, enthusiastic PhD student in the field of Environmental Systems Microbiology. The position will involve developing and combining state-of-the-art machine learning and experimental methods to tackle a grand challenge in environmental microbiology predicting ecosystem function from the sum of its parts. Because of the effects of climate change, this is one of the most important scientific questions in the 21st century. This position will push the boundaries in bacterial genomics, bacterial ecology, evolution, and environmental systems research.
The announcement is made for four years, whereby the employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of four years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.

Job Description:
Active participation in research, teaching and administration. This includes:
+ Involvement in a research project on combining machine-learning, genomics, and theory to predict ecosystem function in light of climate change
+ Publications and presentations
+ Involvement in project applications for third-party funding
+ Teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
+ Supervision of trainees and students
We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within the first year of employment.
Profile:
+ Diploma or masters degree in Biology/Microbiology/Bioinformatics/Computer science/Physics/Math, or equivalent qualification
+ Excellent command of written and spoken English
+ High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
+ Excellent team-working ability
Methodological competences (one or more of the following):
+ Knowledge of Linux/Unix systems
+ Experience with machine-learning algorithms
+ Experience in bacterial genomics
In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have very good communication and organizational skills.
