The Department for Anesthesiology at the University Medicine Greifswald – public corporation – offers the following position:

Doctoral Researcher (m/f/d)

The limitation of the contract is based on the Science Contract Act (“Wissenschaftszeitvertrags­gesetz”). The project entitled „Antinociceptive effect of transauricular electrical vagal nerve stimulation and its underlying mechanisms (DFG US 85/7-1)“ intends to test the analgetic effect of transauricular electrical vagal nerve stimulation (tVNS) on central sensitization in healthy volunteers. This is an equivalent model for testing effects on pain modulation in patients with chronic pain. In a further approach we will evaluate the involvement of the parasympathetic nervous system in pain modulating effects of tVNS and will then examine whether effective tVNS is modulating functional activation of brain areas, processing emotional and autonomic nervous system aspects of thermal pain. There is a close interaction with researchers from Biological Psychology in Greifswald and the Functional Imaging Unit of the Radiology Department at the UMG. For the third aim a cooperation project with the Functional Imaging Unit has been funded.

Our requirements:

We are looking for a candidate with a very good Master degree in psychology, neuroscience or comparable program and excellent German language knowledge. Applicants with a strong interest in neuroscientific research on learning, emotional processing, and pain processing but also in neurophysiology, with prior experimental and statistical knowledge, and a very good command of English will be given preference. Major responsibilities include planning and running behavioral experiments, data analysis and contribution to publications and project reports.
